As everyone knows it’s no fun getting caught in a downpour without an umbrella. Now one Japanese drink company is hoping to help out. The firm is making umbrellas available at many of its vending machines across the Kanto area.

The umbrellas don’t come out of the machines. They’re just kept in a box attached to one side of the machines. Anyone in needs is welcome to take one away for free on the understanding that they will return it later.

Three railway operators are cooperating with the program by offering umbrellas from their lost and found centers. The umbrellas are among some 100 thousand umbrellas that the companies say are left on their trains each year.

A passenger on a train line affiliated with the project is impressed. “It’ll be so handy when it suddenly starts raining”.

The beverage company is hoping that people who use the umbrellas will get to know its drinks better and become loyal customers.

Kanto area:

厳密には「関東圏」=関東地区の周辺も含んだあいまいな表現。

 

areaとは「～のあたり一帯/～圏」というあいまいな言葉であり、その範囲がはっきりしていない地域を指すのが特徴。

district: 政府などによってはっきりと境界を定められている区画、地区

3. operatorのように-orのつく単語の意味は、人間に限らない

enjoyはフォーマルな単語；喜びjoyを得るという改まったニュアンスがある。書き言葉ではよく使うが、話し言葉では決まり文句を除いてそれほど使われない。

 

「何かを楽しむ/楽しかった」にはfunを使うのが自然。

 

A: Did you enjoy your birthday?

(校長先生などが）誕生日は楽しかったですか?

B: Yeah, I had fun! うん、楽しかったよ！

 

funは「楽しさ/楽しいこと」

This is fun! これは楽しい！

funは形容詞として使われる場合でも名詞として感じる人が多い。それはこの単語が長い間正式には名詞とてだけとらえられてきたから。

Hannah Grace: I am so impressed by the clever solution. The company has solved the problem of what to do with the lost umbrellas as well as provided a much needed service to commuters who get caught in the rain.

 

Ito Sam: I believe we call that killing two birds with one stone meaning that you accomplish two things with one action.

 

Hannah Grace: Yes. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve traveled across Tokyo without an umbrella only to be caught in a downpour. I’ll definitely be using this service.

 

Ito Sam: And fun part is you can try a new drink every time you borrow an umbrella.

 

Hannah Grace: That’s true!

 

 

放送では毎回「比較的簡単な英語」と言われますが、なかなかどうして、タフです。冒頭のgetting caught in a downpour、聞き取れませんでした。まだまだこちらの修行も足りない、ということですね。
